Cardinal Urban Gardens started with a simple experiment—could we actually harvest veggies in the middle of a Canadian winter? The answer was yes, and that first harvest of homegrown kale and spinach in January sparked a passion for growing food year-round.
What began as a single raised bed has since expanded into a thriving backyard garden filled with seasonal vegetables, herbs, and perennials. Our journey is about learning, growing more each year, and sharing what we discover so that anyone can grow their own food - whether with a backyard, balcony, or sunny windowsill.
We believe that growing your own food is powerful - it connects you to nature, strengthens food security, and shortens supply chains. Our goal is to make gardening easy and accessible for everyone, whether you want to harvest your own meals or simply enjoy the process of tending to plants.
Through experiments, successes, and lessons learned, we share knowledge to inspire more people to grow and eat "hyper-local"—right from their own spaces.
Hi, I'm Erika! I'm the creator of Cardinal Urban Gardens, and am a passionate advocate for growing food in urban spaces and making sustainability more accessible. My favorite crops to grow include tomatoes (nothing beats a homegrown tomato for flavour!!), as well as alliums like garlic and onions, becuase they are so easy and have such a good storage life - and of course, fresh herbs, because every meal is better with fresh, homegrown flavour.
I have a background in climate change and food systems research, and am deeply inspired by the way growing food fosters a connection to the environment, our meals, and our communities. I believe that growing food isn’t just about gardening... it’s about empowering people to engage with their food system, build resilience, and cultivate a more sustainable future, one plant at a time.
